David Paul

Dr. David Paul is the Director of Brain and Spine Trauma and an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY. He completed his undergraduate studies at Hope College in Holland, MI, and earned his medical degree from the University of Rochester, where he also obtained a Master’s in Neurobiology and Anatomy. Dr. Paul’s neurosurgical training includes residency and an enfolded CAST fellowship in neurocritical care at the University of Rochester Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in complex deformity spine surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

With a clinical focus on the treatment of traumatic brain and spine injuries, as well as complex spinal deformities, Dr. Paul is committed to advancing clinical and translational science in these areas. He is particularly passionate about addressing the racial and ethnic disparities that persist in neurosurgery, especially as they relate to the disproportionate impact of traumatic brain and spine injuries in under resourced communities. His research interests are focused on understanding and mitigating the systemic challenges faced by these patient populations along the continuum of care. His translational research interests include using advanced neuroimaging modalities to better understand the trajectory of recovery in patients with traumatic brain injuries.

Dr. Paul’s dedication extends beyond his clinical and academic roles. He has served on the Board of Trustees for Hope College, is a founding member and advisor to the Minority Male Leadership Association at the University of Rochester and is an active member of the URSMD Admissions Committee. His community engagement both locally and nationally reflects his commitment to fostering leadership and diversity within and outside the medical field.

Outside of his professional responsibilities, Dr. Paul is a devoted husband and father of two boys. He enjoys spending his free time engaging in sports, golfing, yardwork, and traveling with his family. He also founded a specialty coffee roastery, Bold & Gritty Coffee, which uses its platform to raise awareness around issues of mental health and Black male success.
